There She Blows: FrankenSandy Getting Closer!

So, still here sitting at my desk but I've now finished a paper outline and my online case studies and am hoping to keep on the productive line while there's still internet and power. Which is why I've saved most of my reading for now, when the power starts flickering and we're gonna get bored outta our minds. I'm excited to light candles, though. That's my favorite part about power outages--the candles!

The wind has now gone from whistling to howling and as I sit here and stare outside my window, even our biggest trees are starting to bend and sway and the tiny branches are moving across the lawn like it's no big deal. The leaves are spinning in circles, 'round and 'round, and while the fall colors make the spiral patterns pretty, you can see how quickly the winds are moving and get kind of nervous, but are awestruck at how beautiful some of these things look. There are strong gusts and not-so-strong-gusts but watching the tops of trees is somehow seriously unnerving and the louder the wind is, the more nervous you get. And I'm now thinking that the barren branches of the winter are going to come a few months early, especially at the rate that the wind is stripping these branches bare.

And right now, there is some rest, but you can still hear the wind coming closer and closer in the background, touching the tops of trees and causing them to sway and sway and sway. Our little shed looks safe, covered in leaves and the tiny branches that have fallen are scattered across my roof. Hoping that things remain sort of calm.

The hurricane itself is supposed to hit in an hour or two at this point. Surrounding towns have closed off, they've shut down our main highway because the flooding is so bad down south that no one can get out or in and they don't want people trying. In the nearest towns, some have already lost power and that's why we're worried--not so much about the coming rain but that our beautiful oaks and maples and hickories are going to take down the power lines that we rely on.

And the wind is getting stronger and the trees only keep swaying and for now, that's all I have to tell you.

Stay safe.
